When Meaghen and I had our initial call, she mentioned that she and her fianceé were NOT photo people. In fact, she said Joey loathed having his photo taken and for their wedding, they wanted Justin and I to be as hands off as possible. And I was like SAY LESS. As wedding photographers that love photojournalism, this is pretty much our dream. There is of course always room for the smiley formal portraits, (I think they definitely have their deserved place in a wedding day!) but being able to truly document a couple interacting with each other and their families, completely unprompted with nearly zero intervention from us is so special. I saw a quote recently from another photographer named Tracy Jade where she said this: “A documentary photographer creates quality photos using observation as a primary skill, with the belief that people, as they exist, have inherent value.” This resonated with me deeply, and I will be tucking this little bit of wisdom into my pocket and bringing it with me to all my future weddings.
Anyway! All of this to say- People are interesting and worthy of being documented- as they are. A wedding would happen with or without a camera. Let’s remove the need to preform and have photos of facilitated memories, and soak up our biggest days with our favorite people. As we are.
Please enjoy scrolling through one of our favorite wedding days, shot on digital and 35mm film.
Cheers to The Gregorys!
